Papeete or the peninsula: where to base yourself in Tahiti?
Here is how we would put it, from Toahotu. Stay near Papeete if you have one night between two flights, an early boat to Moorea or want restaurants in the evening. Come to the peninsula if you want the lagoon outside the door, silence, Teahupo'o and an island that still lives at its own pace. The two combine very well.
- Three nights or more on Tahiti: the peninsula. One night between two flights: near the airport.
- The Moorea ferry leaves from Papeete: allow 1 h 30 from Toahotu for the first boat.
- A whole house on the peninsula often costs what a room costs on the west coast.
- There is no nightlife and no beach with facilities on the peninsula: a virtue or a flaw, depending on you.
The short answer
Most travellers pass through Tahiti without staying: one night near the airport, then Moorea or Bora Bora. That is a pity. The west coast of Tahiti Nui, from Faa'a to Punaauia, is convenient and lively. The peninsula, 1 h 15 away, is another island: green, calm, resort-free, with a lagoon you often have to yourself. If you have three nights or more on Tahiti, sleep on the peninsula.
Near Papeete: who is it for?
For a late arrival or an early departure, for the dawn ferry to Moorea, for the restaurants and the food trucks of Place Vaiete, for the museum and the beaches of Punaauia. The west coast hotels have pools, bars and the sunset over Moorea. A night or two is pleasant there, a week rarely.
The peninsula: who is it for?
For those who want the lagoon at the end of the lawn rather than at the end of a lift. For families with kayaks within reach, for surfers and anyone who wants to see Teahupo'o, for travellers who prefer food trucks to buffets, and for everyone looking for a Polynesia that is not playing a part. You need a car and must accept that evenings are quiet.
The distances, honestly
Airport to Temenino: 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 along the south coast. It is neither a detour nor an expedition, but it is not next door: plan arrival and departure accordingly. Once on the peninsula everything is under an hour away: Taravao ten minutes, Teahupo'o fifteen, Tautira forty-five.
The budget
On the peninsula you pay for a whole house with kitchen and washing machine at the price of a west coast hotel room, and you cook the fish bought at the roadside. Add the car, essential here and useful everywhere on Tahiti. Stays of seven nights or more are discounted automatically at Temenino.
Our advice: both
Spend most of your Tahiti time on the peninsula, and keep the last night near the airport if your flight leaves early. Or arrive late, sleep one night in Faa'a, and come down the next morning rested. Send us your flight times: we will tell you what we would do.
Still not sure? Ask us
Tell us who is coming, roughly when, and what you want from the trip. We will tell you whether the peninsula suits you, even if the answer is no.
