Getting to Temenino from the airport, and finding the end of the lane

The short version: you land at Faa'a, pick up a rental car, follow the south coast for an hour and a quarter to Taravao, then the Teahupo'o road to PK 58. The Mitirapa lane drops down to the lagoon; Temenino is at the very end. Here is the detail, and what to know before you set off.

  • No ferry: Tahiti Iti is reached by road. Rent the car at the airport, not in town.
  • Buy bottled water and charcoal in Taravao before you come down: it is the last big grocery.
  • The sign at PK 58 says "Villas Mitirapa": that is the right turn, but keep going to the end of the lane.
  • Send us your flight number: we tell Slaveck and prepare the arrival.

On arrival at Faa'a: rent a car

International flights land at Tahiti-Faa'a (PPT), just west of Papeete. There is no ferry to the peninsula: Tahiti Iti is joined to Tahiti Nui by road, and a car is essential in Toahotu. The main rental companies are in the terminal; book ahead, especially in July and August and around the holidays. For night arrivals, check the desk is open at your flight time or ask us about a delivery.

The south coast road: 1 h 15 to 1 h 30

From the airport, head south through Punaauia, Paea and Papara, then Mataiea and Papeari to the Taravao isthmus. It is one road, about 60 kilometres, much of it along the sea. Allow 1 h 15 on a Sunday, 1 h 30 or more on weekdays when offices empty between Papeete and Paea. The roadside PK kilometre markers tell you where you are.

Taravao: the last big shop

Taravao, at the entrance to the peninsula, is the last real town before Temenino: supermarkets, pharmacy, petrol station, cash machines, and food trucks in the evening. Stock up here on bottled water (tap water is not drinkable in Toahotu), charcoal for the barbecue and the first days' shopping. You will be back: it is ten minutes from the houses.

PK 58 and the Mitirapa lane

In Taravao, follow signs for Teahupo'o along the peninsula's west coast road. After Vairao, at PK 58, a sign reading "Villas Mitirapa / Pointe Vivish" marks a lane dropping towards the lagoon on the sea side: that is the Mitirapa lane. The sign names the neighbouring property at the start of the lane. Keep going without stopping to the very end: a surfboard planted in the grass marks the entrance to Temenino. Private parking is behind the houses.

Arriving at night

Many flights land late. The road is lit as far as Taravao and easy after that; the Google Maps link we send with the confirmation leads exactly to the end of the lane, and guests find it without trouble at night. Tell us your time: Slaveck welcomes you on site, and we can leave water and breakfast for the first morning.

Getting around once you are here

Everything is by car. Teahupo'o and its marina are a quarter of an hour to the south, Taravao ten minutes to the north, Tautira and the east coast three quarters of an hour. Fuel is in Taravao and Vairao. There is no public transport of use to a visitor, and taxis are rare on the peninsula.

Tell us when you land

When you book direct, send us your flight number and your arrival time in Tahiti. We will send the map to the end of the lane and let your host know.

Written by the Temenino team, with directions from Slaveck, who lives next door.
